Chapter One: Betrayal (Part A)

“Are you finished yet?” The man inquired impatiently to the scientist at the desk.
“Almost…” He replied striking a few more keys on the keyboard. “There!” He said putting a CD in a slot.
The three computer screens glared red for a second then returned to their original displays of windows and download bars.
“In a few seconds we will have all of Unknown’s data at our disposal.” The scientist said then turned around to the man behind him, “So what is the real purpose of this download huh?”
The tall, ominous man stood studying the scientist for a few seconds, probably piecing his words together. Finally he spoke.
“You know what the Professor has here?” The man said waving is arms openly to the screens, “Power.”
The man walked around and motioned to the technological inventions that decorated the walls and filled the room.
“With just one command the entire world would crumble at his feet, but instead he makes the mistake of searching for ways to benefit humanity. I am here to correct his mistakes.”
The scientist gazed at the man skeptically then replied, “So you’re saying that you want the world under your control? Is that it Max?” The scientist glared at Max then raised his chin and finished, “What will I get?”
“What else is left after the download?” Max asked, ignoring the questions.
“Nothing, after the download all firewalls will disintegrate and it will be easy access to the data.” The scientist replied, “So what will I get?”
“Good.” Max said reaching into his pocket, “What you get is a nice comfy room in Hell Rudy.” Max pulled out a small silver handgun, “Goodbye.” Then he pulled the trigger, sealing Rudy’s fate.
Rudy’s eyes barely widened as the single shot burrowed into his forehead, killing the man instantly. The scientist slumped off the chair and gave one last gasp for air…then was silent.
“Pity.” Max said to the body, “You would have been given so much more if you hadn’t decided on double-crossing me.”
Max tapped the keyboard and an ‘All access’ window appeared at the command.
He smiled a sinful smile and whispered, “Finally.” Max typed in a few keys and said louder, “After countless years of working for that foolish professor, I finally get what I deserve!”
Max was chuckling now as he typed in password, after password, connecting him to different countries and files. Bank, federal, and social information all became accessible to him.
“And now I will link them.” He said then stopped, “Wh…what happened?”
The screens flickered and fuzzed a bit, obscuring the access codes. A siren when off.
“Emergency! Emergency! Corrupted files! Reverting to default programs!” The siren blared.
            “Default programs? What default programs!?”
The screens went dark and the system hummed off.
“Damn it! So Close!” Max shouted pounding his fists onto the keys.
“Throwing a temper tantrum Max?” A voice came from behind, “You always had that nasty temper.”
“Professor.” Max said then smiled, “How nice of you to visit.”
“I can’t say the same to you.” The professor replied, “What are you doing back in my lab?”
Max turned to the professor who stood in his long, white lab coat watching him with crystal rimmed eyes and a deep scowl.
“Just reminiscing on the old days you know, back when I was you apprentice…”
“A choice I bitterly regret.” He replied then looked at Rudy’s body. “I wish you good fortune in the afterlife, my old friend.”
Max laughed again, “A bit touching. Wishing your closest colleague good fortune? Just like you.”
            “And by that you mean?”
“I should just kill you now.” Max pulled out his pistol again and aimed it dead-locked on the professor.
“I wouldn’t if I were you.” The professor said calmly, “If I die you will never get through the default program.”
Max’s eyes narrowed and he frowned but his pistol remained trained on the professor.
“So you finally grew a backbone I see.” Max said still frowning, “A bit late though. You could have shared some of it with Rudy.”
“How so?” The professor asked surprised.
“He was planning to double-cross both of us.” Max said. The professor clenched his jaw and replied, “What makes you say that Max?”
Max smiled once again and relaxed his hand with the gun, playfully swinging it to and fro.
“He said he would. He was going to access the computer and hack your files. In fact that was what each of us really wanted to do.”
“My other assistants?” The professor said barely controlling his anger.
“Yes. Each one of us were waiting for the perfect chance to rise up and take the power you created and wield it the way it should be!” Max said walking back and forth, “Though, none of them had the guts to attempt it… until I made the first move.”
The professor watched the words spill from Max’s mouth and realized what that move was.
            “The accident.” He said numbly.
“It was simple really. Even though you found out I did it my plans still fell into place.”
            “They contacted you, didn’t they?”
Max laughed at the professor’s words.
“Contact me? They practically clawed at my door seeking my help!”
The professor looked down and his countenance changed from growing anger to deepening sadness.
“Charles didn’t come to you, did he?” He asked, exasperated.
“No. He didn’t.” Max turned to the professor, “He didn’t come.”
The professor smiled at that and looked at Max again.
“So are you still intent on hacking through my computer?” He said with confidence. It shook Max.
“Yes.” He replied regaining his composure, “Unlock it now!” Max raised the gun and fired once at his old teacher, hitting his left arm with a dull thud.
